International protests against plans for a new dolphinarium in Kiev

Radolfzell/Kiev – 3/11/2012 - Plans to build a new dolphinarium at the zoo in Kiev, call animal rights activists around the world. They are organized on Facebook and bomb the responsible authorities in Kiev with e-mails and ask them to reject this project.

On 15th March the authorities in Kiev will discuss, whether the request can be granted or not. The director of the zoo in Kiev, Aleksei Tolstoukhov, has answer and do not want such a facility on the ground.

That day Ukrainian animal rights activists from National Ecological Centre of Ukraine, Environment Protection Society “Дружина охорони природи», Facebook Movement Earthling Ukraine also will take to the streets 15th of March at 11.00 in front of Kyiv City Authority for protest against another dolphinarium in Kiev.

ProWal, a German animal rights organization that advocates globally and successfully for the closure of dolphinariums declines, the captivity of marine mammals on principle.

Dolphins are very social animals that live in the sea in large groups. The animals have an enormous motor activity and covering in the wild daily distances of more than 50 kilometers and they can dive in the sea also up to 500 meters deep.

An animal- and species-friendly keeping of marine mammals in captivity is not possible because the most elementary basic needs are taken away from the dolphins. A dolphinarium can never substitute the wild.

The animals are exposed day and night to the noise of the pumps, which are cleaning the water in dolphinariums. To the disinfection of the water chlorine is used in large quantities. This causes direct health consequences for the animals. The corrosive chlorine damages the sensitive skin and the eyes of the dolphins.

Beside numerous whistling sounds, to the notification together, dolphins control the application of ultrasonic tones for the echolocation. In dolphinariums sound their own tone back from the concrete walls. The sonar system of the dolphins collapses in the closed tanks and this important sense atrophied almost completely in captivity.

The captivity, the loneliness, the food and the monotony let the animals suffer physically and emotionally. Their life expectancy in dolphinariums is significantly lower than in their natural habitat. As causes of death there are often pneumonia, liver damage and stomach ulcers.

The worldwide known marine scientist Jacques Yves Cousteau has even watched a dolphin living in captivity because he did not endure the life in such a concrete tank any more.

In Western Europe dolphinariums are things of the past. Presently in 13 EU member states (Great Britain which has closed all its 30 dolphinariums, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Austria, Pole, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czechia, Hungary and Cyprus) no dolphinarium operates.

In many countries a clear trend towards closing of the dolphinariums is noticeable due to the refusal of the population because of the education campaigns of animal welfare organizations and the documentary film awarded with an Oscar "The Cove". In Germany, so far six facilities have been closed by former nine dolphinariums. This year an another dolphinarium in the Zoo Münster will be closed. New dolphinariums are almost nowhere more feasible in Western European countries.

Everywhere the people go on the streets and protest against dolphinariums and demand their closing because of animal cruelty.

Andreas Morlok, CEO of ProWal who recently inspected several dolphinariums in Ukraine, is very concerned about the catastrophic keeping faults and careless contact of sensitive dolphins.

The "Nemo-dolphinariums" offer commercial dolphin shows to the visitors, which are like circus performances where this intelligent marine mammals have to demonstrate silly tricks. The animals were forced to hunger, they get positive training (reward) and they are forced to unnatural behavior (balls balance, plastic discs retrieve, rings juggle and jump by obstacles). The representations of the "Romantic shows" are absolutely unacceptable on Saturday evening. Directly on the edge of the dolphin tank fireworks are lighted, while a fire-eater with stinking paraffin pollutes the air. There are also programs such as "swimming and diving with dolphins" and dolphin therapy which is by science classified as non-successful.

In the small round tanks (diameter of 20 meters – depth of four meters) the dolphins can swim only monotonously in endless circles - if a dolphin wanted to swim at least one minute straight ahead, it would assume a pool length of 800 to 900 meters.

Most dolphins have deep scratches because they are attacked by other conspecifics by ranking fights. For the animals there are no retreading pools.

Often the dolphins hit with their flukes on the water. This is a sign for how aggressive the animals are. Visitors often parents with children to whom the swimming with dolphins or the so-called dolphin therapy are offered are exposed to great dangers and risks.

Direct contacts between humans and dolphins in captivity from both sides put a significant risk of illness or injury by the transference of bacteria. Shoes and hands of the visitors which the animals can also touch are not disinfected. In every "Nemo-dolphinarium" it is usual that the trainers stand disrespectfully on the dolphins and surf on them trough the water. They also position themselves on the snouts of the marine mammals and so they accept considerable injuries for the animals. The music during the performances is immensely loud, comparable to a discotheque. Dolphins can hear ten times better than a human being while still perceive frequencies that the human ear cannot hear. This causes constant stress for the dolphins.

The four dolphins "Skipper", "Boatswain", "Dory" and "Nelly" of "Nemo-dolphinarium" in Kiev are wild caught and are all from the Japanese fishing village of Taiji. Marine mammals are caught there for the world wide dolphin industry and the animals which can not used for this are slaughtered. Only the sale of beautiful dolphins for unit prices of up to 150,000, - USD makes these dolphin hunts lucrative at all. The meat of a dead dolphin is sold by the fishermen for 600 USD for the Japanese market. Worldwide, the dolphin drive hunts, the slaughter and sale of animals to the dolphinarium industry will be sharply criticized.

The Ukraine and in particular the company "Nerum" are directly responsible for atrocities in Japan!

The dolphins, who holds Nerum company in captivity, have experienced unimaginable horrors in their lives and they are now exploited up to their death for purely commercial interests. Do not allow that a company spreads in your country, which supports the hunting of these animals and brings the image of the whole Ukraine worldwide in discredit!

The breeding efforts of dolphins have failed in the Ukraine. During the last 15 years there were only 10 dolphin births in captivity in the Ukraine. How many animals from them are still alive is not known. In February 2012 a total of 74 dolphins in the Ukrainian dolphinariums were housed, which confirms that the majority of the animals are wild caught.

A sustainable breeding is impossible neither in Ukraine nor in Europe. In 40 years of European breeding efforts no sustainable stock could be built up till this day. There are no dolphins in Europe, who live in the third Generation.

The Ukraine seeks the EU membership which require many and great needs. In the EU Member States, for example, there are regulations that prohibit dolphin catches and imports of wild-caught dolphins.

The vice minister of the environment of the Ukraine, Mr. Igor Vildman described himself as the “friend No. 1 for the dolphins in the Ukraine” in a conversation with ProWal at 02/03/2012. Mr. Vildman promised, that the Ministry of ecology will study EU documents about the issure of the import of wild dolphins.

In addition the prohibition of capturing dolphins in the Black Sea will be extended for three years from this point and continuously. It is the Moratorium of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine 20th of September 2011 bans removing dolphins from their native environment till 3 years: http://www.menr.gov.ua/content/article/9351?print=true. In the future it will make it unable to import wild-caught dolphins from other countries to Ukraine and to catch dolphins in the Black and Azov Sea.

Every new building of a dolphinarium is to be rejected because today it is quite foreseeable that these facilities won’t get no more wild caught dolphins in future.

The Government of the Ukraine shows a heart for dolphins

Radolfzell/Kiev – 2/27/2012 - After the East European country was internationally criticized because of the dog killings in preparation of the football European championship during the last months, however, the Ukrainian government shows a heart for dolphins.

ProWal, the German animal rights organization ascertained by several research’s of dolphinariums in the Ukraine serious keeping deficiencies and a scandalous use of captive marine mammals.

Andreas Morlok, CEO of ProWal: “The dolphins which are wild caughted from the Black Sea are pent-up in tiny tanks and have to show stupid tricks which do not correspond to their natural behaviour in this facilities which are straightened on pure commerce with stentorian disco music. Seals are surfing also on dolphins as dolphin trainers who show no respect for the animals. A dolphin trainer stood while "surfing" even on the blowhole of a dolphin, which therefore could not breathe. Loudly pyrotechnics slammed and a fire-eater obscured the whole arrangement with stinking paraffin, according to the audience which shouted "Bravo!" and applauded in the night show. No one of the visitors knew that the four dolphins were caught in cruel drive hunts in Japan and the members of this dolphin pot were killed, together with their babies.“

Representatives of an Ukrainian animal protection organization and ProWal presented substantial documentation material to the vice minister of the environment, Igor Vildman, in Kiev and told him, that the government should decide an import ban without any exception on wild-caughted dolphins.

Andreas Morlok: „In the Ukrainian dolphinariums there were only ten dolphin births during the last 15 years and therefore the breeding is not sustainable. The Ukraine imports and exports also wild-caughted dolphins from Japan to Turkey, Egypt and Armenia etc. A ban on imports into Ukraine would cause a heavy blow to the international dolphin industry and this would be the end of all the 15 dolphinariums in this country. We told to the vizeminister of the environment that the common practice of Ukrainian dolphinariums to import wild-caughted dolphins is strictly forbidden in all EU countries. Because the Ukraine want to be a full membership in the community, the government could implement the EU requirements also now.”

Vice minister of the environment Igor Vildman: „I am the friend No. 1 for the dolphins in the Ukraine!“

The reaction of the vice minister of the environment who appeared very dolphin friendly surprised the animal welfarists, according to the CEO of ProWal: „The vice minister of the environment who was discussed during our meeting by several dolphin specialists promised us spontaneously that the Ukraine will copy 1 to 1the requirements of the EU for import bans on wild-caughted dolphins! Moreover, even the catch ban on dolphins in the Black Sea will still be extended indefinitely for another three years. With it the Ukraine also follows to the objectives of the ACCOBAMS agreement for the protection of the dolphins.“

According to data from ProWal, all together there are in 15 Ukrainian dolphinariums 74 dolphins, 35 seals, 4 sea lions, 1 walrus and 3 Beluga whales who are all used for purely commercial purposes, like dolphin shows, swimming and diving with dolphins and the controversial Dolphin Assistant Therapy for people with disabilities.

Anreas Morlok: “Some dolphinariums do not properly licensed to operate a dolphinarium and can only work because they have good contacts to authorities. The owner of the dolphinarium in Kiew does concern with protesters not squeamish. He kicked during a demonstration several animal welfarists last year. The Security staff of the arrangement is armed even with truncheons and guns.“

Dolphins are still eaten in the Ukraine!

ProWal, which is campaigned as the first international animal protection organization for the closure of dolphinariums in the Ukraine reports about a meeting with an informant on the peninsula Crimea: “As Ukrainian biologists confirmed, there is also even today the continuation of an old tradition at the Black Sea. Dolphins are caught by fishermen in their nets, as a bycatch on purpose and the meat is still used as food. It is eaten by the fishermen and is sold even also illegally. At the market in Simferopol and in restaurants of smaller villages on the Crimea shish kebab spits with dolphin meat are offered.“

ProWal closes a dolphinarium!

Monika Laubach, a German animal rights activist who was with ProWal in the Ukraine: ": „Dolphins and a beluga-whale were kept for commercial purposes in a tiny tank of the Hotel Yalta in the city of Yalta on the Crimea up to now every summer. The hotel management leased the pool to a dolphin owner, who had been also offered the dubious dolphin therapy. We were able to argue the management of the hotel during a personal visit into not keeping marine mammals this year and to close the dolphinarium finally. No more marine mammals will exploid there for commercial interests. That makes us very happy!”

Dominik Haldi from Switzerland, who accompanied ProWal trough the Ukraine reports: I am very glad about the fact that we have received not only obliging assents from the Ukrainian government for the protection of the dolphins, but also about the successful closing of the dolphinariums at this hotel. If you can see for yourself how the dolphins are kept in captivity only because of money interests, then that's more than embarrassing. In a dolphin show in Donezk I observe how dolphins are forced to learn unknown show elements. Because a dolphin did not explain an order of a dolphin trainer, this was not fed, while the other animals got something to eat. A dolphin had to turn even several penal rounds and balance a ball on the snout, while the dolphin trainer fed the other dolphins with fish. I was horrified when I saw, that the trainer turned directly on the blow whole of the animal, so that this could not breathe during another penal round. If my compatriots in Switzerland all the friends No.1 for the Dolphins, it would be here since a long time ago also no dolphinarium. I hope very much that also the Swiss government decrees, finally, an import ban on dolphins, so that the last Swiss dolphinarium "ConnyLand" also have to close.“

ProWal will travel to Ukraine again in late March to campaign for the closure of other dolphinariums. Besides the animal protection organization, supports a private animal shelter in Kiev, which take up dogs and cats from the street. ProWal has already announced a report about the situation of the strays in Ukraine. ----
