Brief an UEFA, FIFA, die Färinger Regierung, Botschaft Dänemark, Färinger Fußballnationalmannschaft, dänische Fußballnationalmannschaft und alle Verantwortlichen für den Walfang auf den Färöer Inseln

Betr.: Grindadràp – das massenhafte, brutale Abschlachten bedrohter Grindwale auf den Färöer Inseln – Ausschluss der Färöer Inseln aus allen internationalen Wettbewerben - Boykottaufruf

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

als Geschäftsführer der gemeinnützigen Meeresschutzorganisation ProWal möchte ich Sie hiermit über die grausamen und unnötigen Aktivitäten eines Ihrer Mitgliedsländer informieren.

Die Färinger gelten bekanntlich als sehr fußballbegeisterte Nation. Was jedoch kaum jemand in Europa weiß ist, dass auf den Färöer Inseln jährlich die als bedroht geltenden Grindwale (auch Pilotwale genannt) massenhaft zu Hunderten und Tausenden auf brutalste Art abgeschlachtet werden. Dabei wird nicht zwischen Jungtieren und trächtigen Kälbern unterschieden.

Für die Färinger ist es ein Riesenspaß für Groß und Klein, sie machen daraus ein Volksfest, für die jungen Männer gilt das Töten als Zeichen von Stärke und Bestätigung. Sobald der Ruf eines Insulaners „Grindaboð!“ (Grindalarm) ertönt, laufen alle Bewohner bestimmter Küstenregionen ans Meer, bewaffnet mit Messern und Eisenhaken.

Die Wale werden durch eine Treibjagd in eine Bucht getrieben und die Teilnehmer dieses archaischen Schlachtfestes stechen mit ihren Messern auf die in Panik geratenen Tiere ein und schlagen ihnen Eisenhaken in ihre Blaslöcher, um die Atmung zu unterbrechen. Von offizieller Seite gilt diese Tötungsmethode als „human“. Jedoch belegen unzählige Videos genau das Gegenteil.

Zudem nehmen auch Kinder unter 14 Jahren an diesen Schlachtorgien teil, die international als illegale Kinderarbeit angesehen werden.

Das Fleisch, das hochgradig unter anderem mit Methyl-Quecksilber verseucht ist, wird an die Einwohner, auch Kinder und Schwangere, ungeachtet aller Warnungen, auch der eigenen Gesundheitsbehörde, verteilt und konsumiert. Auch wird Walfleisch von Privatpersonen, in Restaurants und auf Märkten ohne Hinweise auf die hohen Kontaminationen an Touristen verkauft.

Der jährlich stattfindende Mord an Delfinen und Walen geschieht direkt vor der Haustüre Europas. Die Färöer Inseln gehören zwar nicht zur EU, sie haben aber die in der EU geltenden Gesetze zum Schutz der Meeressäuger zu respektieren und zu akzeptieren.

Seit weit mehr als 20 Jahren ignorieren sie internationale Proteste, allein dieses Jahr wurden bisher 1.013 Delfine und Wale, die höchste Fangquote seit 1997, trotz heftigster Proteste weltweit, brutal abgeschlachtet!

1.013 Dolphins and Whales together

Als Geschäftsführer von ProWal besuchte ich gemeinsam mit Jürgen Ortmüller vom Wal- und Delfinschutz-Forum (WDSF) im Juli und August 2010 die Färöer Inseln. Wir haben dort zahlreiche Skandale aufgedeckt, die auch die Einheimischen am liebsten totschweigen würden.

Auch diese belegen, dass es sich um nichts anderes als ein fröhliches Gemetzel handelt, bei dem viele eigene Vorschriften außer Acht gelassen werden.

Das WDSF stellte daraufhin Strafanzeige gegen die örtlichen Behörden.

Fußballer sollten für die Jugend ein Vorbild sein. Dieser Sport dient auch der weltweiten Völkerverständigung. Die Färöer Inseln sind weder Vorbilder im Tierschutz, noch zeigen sie Interesse, Gesetze anderer Länder in diesem Bereich zu respektieren oder umzusetzen.

Solch ein Land, das kollektiv den Walfang unterstützt, kann kein Teil eines modernen Europas sein, denn hier ist der Walfang und der Handel mit Walprodukten schon seit vielen Jahren strengstens verboten. Ein Land, das sich europäischem Recht und seinen Gesetzen so massiv widersetzt, hat jegliche Legitimation verloren, an europäischen Wettbewerben teilzunehmen. Die semiautonomen Färöer Inseln, die dem Reichsverband Dänemarks angehören, schaden international nicht nur dem Ruf des Landes Dänemark, das mittlerweile unter einem weltweiten Boykott von Touristen und seiner Produkte zu leiden hat, sondern auch dem Ansehen der dänischen Fußballnationalmannschaft!

Der Fußballsport ist ein hilfreiches Instrument, um die Verständigung zwischen den Völkern zu fördern und Fairness und Ethik zu vermitteln. Der internationale Fußball kann sich der Vermittlung dieser Werte nicht entziehen und muss konsequent gegen seine eigenen Mitglieder vorgehen, um sich nicht mitschuldig am Tod von unschuldigen Lebewesen zu machen.

Das „Neue Europa-Denken“ hat auch im europäischen Fußballsport einen hohen Stellenwert: Hier haben barbarische, sich auf Wikinger Traditionen berufende Massenabschlachtungen von hilflosen Tieren keinen Platz mehr.

Gehen Sie mit gutem Beispiel voran und zeigen Sie der Jugend, dass sich die UEFA nicht nur gegen Diskriminierung und gegen Drogenkonsum ausspricht, sondern seine Verantwortung gegenüber der Jugend und den folgenden Generationen noch als viel dringlicher sieht und größeren Wert auch auf den Erhalt der Arten und der Biodiversität legt.

Wir möchten Sie daher bitten, den Walfang auf den Färöer Inseln öffentlich zu verurteilen und der Färinger Fußballnationalmannschaft und dem dortigen Verband und Entscheidungsträgern eine Protestnote unter Androhung des Ausschlusses aus internationalen Wettbewerben zu übergeben. Ein Ausschluss kann solange erfolgen, bis die Regierung der Färöer Inseln ihre eigene Gesetzgebung den Vereinbarungen der Europäischen Union angepasst hat.

Wir behalten uns die Möglichkeit vor, einen europaweiten Boykottaufruf gegenüber Fußballspielen mit Beteiligung der Färöischen Nationalmannschaft zu verkünden.

Letter to UEFA, FIFA, the Faroe Government, Embassy of Denmark, Faroe Football National Team, Danish Football National Team and all people responsible for the whaling on the Faroe Islands

Concerning: Grindadráp – the mass, crude slaughter of threatened pilot whales on the Faroe Islands – exclusion of the Faroe Islands from all international competitions - boycott call

Dear Ladies and Gentleman,

as the manager of the charitable marine protection organization ProWal, I would like to inform you about the cruel and unnecessary activities of your member countries.

The Faroes, as everybody knows, are considered to be a nation who is very eager with football. What hardly anybody knows in Europe, is that on the Faroe Islands, yearly hundreds and thousands of threatened pilot whales are being slaughtered in the most brutal way. They spare not even babies and pregnant calves.

For the Faroe, for adults as well as children the killing is great fun. They make a public festival out of it. For the young men, the killing is a token of strength and self-affirmation. As soon as the call of an islander „Grindaboð! “ (Pilot whale alarm) is heard, all inhabitants of certain coastal regions run to the sea, armed with knives and iron hooks.

The whales are being driven into a bay and the participants of this ancient battle party, stab there knives into the panicked animals and drive iron hooks in there blowholes to interrupt the respiration. From official side, this killing method is "humane". However, countless videos proof exactly the opposite.

Children under the age of 14 years also take part in these battle orgies, which are looked internationally as an unlawful child employment.

The meat which is extremely contaminated with methyl mercury amongst others, is distributed and consumed to the inhabitants, including children and pregnant woman, in spite of all warnings, even of there own health authorities. Also whale meat is sold by private individuals, in restaurants and at markets, without warning notes to tourist of the high contaminations.

The yearly murder of dolphins and whales happen directly in front of the door of Europe. Though the Faroe Islands do not belong to the EU, they have to respect and accept the laws applying in the EU for the protection of the marine mammals.

For far more than 20 years, they ignore international protests. This year up to now, 1.013 dolphins and whales, the highest fishing quota since 1997, were brutally slaughtered, in spite of the most severe protests worldwide!

1.013 dead Dolphins and Whales all together

As the manager of ProWal, I and Jürgen Ortmüller, manager of the whale and dolphin protection forum (WDSF), visited Faroe Islands in July and August 2010. We have uncovered numerous scandals, which locals would prefer to keep silence.

That proves, that the killing is nothing else than a happy slaughter, where many of their own regulations are ignored.

As a result, the WDSF filed charges against the local authorities.

Footballers should be role models for the youth. This sport also serves the worldwide understanding among nations. The Faroe Islands are neither role models in the protection of animals, nor do they show any interest to respect or implement the laws of other countries around this area.

A country which supports collectively the whaling, cannot be part of modern Europe. In Europe, the whaling and trade with whale products are strictly forbidden for many years now. A country which contradicts European rights and laws so massively, has lost any legitimization to take part in European competitions. Faroe Islands, which is still a remain part of Denmark, damages internationally not only the name of the country Denmark, which has to suffer meanwhile from a worldwide boycott of tourism and Danish products, but also the respect of the Danish national football team!

The football sport is a helpful instrument to promote the understanding between the people and gets across fairness and ethics. The international football can't avoid the mediation of these values and must strictly go forward against their own members, to not become guilty in the death of innocent living beings.

The „new European thinking“also has great significance in the European football sport: There is no room for these barbarian so called Vikings traditions of mass butchering of helpless animals.

Lead the way with good examples and show the youth, that the UEFA expresses itself not only against discrimination and against drug consumption, but more important sees there responsibility to the youth and the following generations, and takes great value of the preservation of the species and the biodiversity.

Therefore we would like to ask you to publicly condemn the whaling on the Faroe Islands and to hand over the protest note to the Faroe National Football Team and the football association and decision makers under the threat of exclusion from international competitions. An exclusion can occur until the government of the Faroe Islands has adapted their own legislation to the arrangements of the European Union.

We reserve the rights of possibility, to announce a European-wide boycott against football matches with participation of the Faroe National Team.
